What is a Kubestronaut?
According to the CNCF (Cloud Native Computing Foundation):
The Kubestronaut program recognizes community leaders who have consistently invested in their ongoing education and grown their skill level with Kubernetes. Individuals who have successfully passed every CNCF’s Kubernetes certifications – CKA, CKAD, CKS, KCNA, KCSA – will receive the title of “Kubestronaut”, as well as these additional benefits:

The idea
Inspired by some impressive reports from the CNCF, we developed comprehensive Kubestronaut metrics using Python Selenium.
The metrics
The data was collected on September 24, 2024. As you know, these metrics will change over time. Based on the latest private Kubestronaut meeting in September 2024, Kubestronauts are raising approximately 30 people a week.
Global Kubestronaut Metrics Overview
Europe leads with 295 Kubestronauts, comprising nearly 48.5% of the total community. Combined with the Asia Pacific’s 31.6% members, these two regions account for over 80.1% of the global Kubestronaut population.

Kubestronauts by region in percentage
North America, South America, and Africa collectively account for less than 20% of the Kubestronaut community, indicating a smaller presence in these regions. North America leads among these three with 12.2%, while Africa has the fewest members at just 2.8%.
Top 10 Countries with most Kubestronauts
India leads the list with 64 Kubestronauts, significantly ahead of the United States with 44 and Germany with 39. Together, these three countries account for over 50% of the top 10 Kubestronauts, while the remaining countries each contribute between 18 and 35 members, showing a more distributed presence across Europe and North America.

Top 10 countries with Kubestronauts per population
This analysis focuses on the number of Kubestronauts per capita to determine which country has the highest representation relative to its population. Luxembourg ranks first, with 0.00063% of its population as Kubestronauts, despite having only 4 members. Norway and Estonia follow closely, with 0.00033% and 0.00030% per capita, respectively. Even though countries like Switzerland and Singapore have more total Kubestronauts (20 and 13), their per capita percentages are slightly lower, around 0.00023%, highlighting the impact of population size on this metric.

Top 10 countries by % from total Kubestronauts
This analysis highlights the top 10 countries with the highest percentage of Kubestronauts relative to the global Kubestronaut community. India leads with 10.53% of the total Kubestronauts, despite its vast population, showing a substantial presence. The United States follows with 7.24%, while Germany takes third place with 6.41%. Smaller countries like the Netherlands and Norway show a notable presence, with 5.76% and 2.96% of total Kubestronauts, respectively, demonstrating that population size is not always proportional to the percentage of Kubestronauts from each country. Despite having a much smaller population, Switzerland also contributes 3.29%, on par with Poland and Canada, indicating strong engagement in the community relative to its size.

What does the script do?
The script performs several essential tasks:
- Scrapes the Kubestronaut data from the CNCF page using Selenium.
- Fetches the population data for each country asynchronously for efficiency.
- Sorts and processes the data in Python, our preferred environment.
- Creates static headers for the Google Sheet to structure the data.
- Prepares batch updates for the sorted and processed data.
- Updates the Google Sheet with the batch data, ensuring it’s ready for further analysis.
